Does Qigong Work?
First, I want to emphasize that Qigong is not a cure-all; it has its limitations. Its role is not always what people think of regarding health, and many misconceptions are associated with the practice. Let's first address the misconceptions surrounding Qigong and tackle the question, "Does Qigong Work?" Additionally, I will share scientific studies that either support or refute claims about Qigong.
Misconception 1: Qigong is Only for the Elderly
Since you see many older people practicing Qigong, it is easy to assume this practice is only for older adults. Even when I first started training in Qigong with the Old master, the younger students carried this misconception and did not want anything to do with the practice; they only came to Kung Fu.
Misconception 2: Qigong is just a slow-motion exercise
Qigong has a reputation as a slowed-down exercise. While it is true that slowing movements down can increase balance and strength, not all Qigong exercises are performed slowly. Some exercises can be done more rigorously, while others are static and don't involve movement at all.
Misconception 3: Qigong is a Religious Practice
Seeing monks in robes performing this practice can lead people to think that they must adopt a belief or faith or that one must convert to a particular faith to practice it.
Misconception 4: Qigong is the Same as Tai Chi
Though these practices are similar and related, sharing many concepts, they serve two different purposes altogether. Understanding the distinctions can empower both practices.
Misconception 5: You will get magical Qi powers, and unicorns will assist your life.
The word Qi seems mysterious because it is foreign to English, so there is much room for misinterpretation and misinformation. Many charlatans are waiting to pounce on unsuspecting practitioners with wild promises of special abilities, and there is no shortage of people who wish to believe this.
Misconception 6: Qigong will heal all my ailments
Many people discover Qigong when they start experiencing health issues, and it is often recommended as a way to support their well-being. When we experience pain or loss, we find ourselves more open to out-of-the-box solutions when Western medicine fails.
Misconception 7: Qigong and Meditation Can Fix Mental Health Issues
Suffering in any way, even as a witness, is enough to look for change. While some mental challenges are on a spectrum from mild to severe, there is a belief that there is a one-size-fits-all answer for these issues.
Misconception 8: Qigong is a Martial Art
Because Qigong can enhance martial arts, and there is a martial Qigong, people often think it is a martial arts system, when in fact, it is not, although it aids in and can improve martial arts.
Now, let's address each of these Misconceptions.
