Student Spotlight: Shereel Washington
Instructor & Program Lead, Move Spirit and Rhythm, and Temple GuardianAt the Deep Root Center for Spiritual Studies, each student’s journey is unique—but some stories stand out for their depth and transformative impact
This month, we’re honored to feature Shereel Washington, a dedicated student, instructor, and the creative force behind our Move Spirit and Rhythm dance events.Shereel first discovered Deep Root Center in 2018, drawn in by curiosity and a sense of representation she hadn’t often seen in martial arts spaces. “I saw Master Sheldon’s profile on Alignable and was curious, especially seeing a Black martial arts instructor. That wasn’t what I was used to seeing,” she recalls. After visiting our website and seeing the videos, she knew there was something special here. Her first class left a lasting impression. “The teaching was so solid and thorough… I went home, turned off the lights, lit candles, and tried to recreate the feeling I had in class. That first class gave me a sense of peace I wanted to keep repeating.” For Shereel, the practice quickly became a vital tool for navigating life’s challenges, from managing stress to deepening her sense of self.Over the years, Shereel’s involvement has grown—from student to instructor, and as a partner in producing events that bring our community together. “Every year, the learning gets richer—from the practical to the profound. Martial arts here isn’t just about self-protection—it’s about caring for myself physically and emotionally.”Moments like Qi Fest, adapting to online teaching during the pandemic, and the recent support she received from the Deep Root community during a family health crisis have all shaped her journey. “This journey has been about more than martial arts. It’s about learning how to ‘kung fu’ in life—finding balance, resilience, and support, both inside and out.”We’re grateful for Shereel’s leadership, creativity, and the spirit she brings to Deep Root. Her story is a reminder of the power of practice, community, and the small moments that make the biggest difference.
